An unidentified speaker at the Arts, Parks, Libraries & Entertainment Committee meeting reported that multiple Metro Parks facilities remain closed after recent storm damage and that cleanup efforts could take months.
The speaker said Metro Parks has mobilized roughly 150 employees and four contracted tree companies to remove downed trees and clear debris. "Y'all know that it's a mess out there," the unidentified speaker said, adding that about "200, 250 people" are working on recovery in total.
The speaker listed facilities closed until further notice: all city golf courses, Hamilton Creek Marina, Hadley Tennis Center, Brookmeade Greenway, Fannie Mae Dees Playground, Beeman Nature Center, Bells Bend Nature Center, Richland Creek Greenway and Warner Park Nature Center. The Warner Park Nature Center was described as among the hardest hit.
Describing damage, the speaker noted fallen trees across Southwest neighborhoods, damaged buildings, power outages and frozen pipes. "We're looking at probably 3 to 6 months to get all this cleaned up," the unidentified speaker said, noting staff are prioritizing clearing roads so residents can drive in and out of affected areas.
As of the briefing, the speaker said Shelby, Ravenwood and Cedar Hill roads had been cleared and were passable. The speaker offered to send a follow-up email to the committee with additional information the next day.
The meeting concluded after the update; no formal motions or votes were reported on the topic.
