Residents tell Republic council snow removal left sidewalks impassable; council to review

Two Republic residents used the council’s citizens participation period to urge the city to revisit its snow‑removal and speed‑limit practices.
Douglas, who said he was interpreting for his father, James Lutz of 442 North Glenwood, told the council that Lutz has lived in Republic for 20 years and is nearly 90. According to Douglas, Lutz ‘‘loves Republic’’ but could not reach his mailbox for several days after a recent snowfall because sidewalks and the street were icy and uncleared. Douglas said the family photographed the conditions and asked the council to check snow‑plow priorities for that neighborhood and consider whether posted speed limits are consistent with nearby school zones.
Ray Kopatic, another longtime resident, described a recurring pattern where plowing leaves large piles or windrows that force repeated shoveling and limit access. Kopatic said vehicles parked on the street can leave 3–4 feet of uncompacted snow at driveways, creating a hardship for older residents who rely on scooters or walkers.
Mayor Eric Franklin thanked both speakers, said staff would submit the addresses for review, and confirmed the council would look into the speed‑limit concern. Franklin asked staff to follow up and said the public‑works team would be asked to evaluate whether special circumstances apply in the cited locations.
The council did not take formal action during the public‑comment period; staff said it would report findings back to council when available.
