Burlington committee debates calendar start date and whether to hold school on Good Friday

Superintendent and administrators presented a draft academic calendar that would bring staff back in late August and begin classes for students on Monday, Aug. 31, a shift intended to reduce pressure on the last week of June given Labor Day’s late date next year.
The superintendent said the proposed schedule was the top teacher choice in a staff survey and would include an asynchronous virtual staff training day and a professional‑development sequence prior to student arrival. He also proposed moving a December professional‑development day to Monday, Jan. 4, and using Tuesday, Nov. 3 (Election Day) as a single parent‑conference day to help relieve traffic and polling‑place pressures.
A more contested topic was whether to schedule a school day on Good Friday (March 26). The Burlington Educators Association representative, Sean Musselman, described mixed survey results: a substantial portion of educators preferred school on Good Friday, others would observe religious practice and not attend, and some said they would come if the day were an early release instead of a full half day. Committee members asked the administration and BEA for more granular polling that distinguishes full‑day versus half‑day or early‑release attendance and for a parental survey.
Committee members also asked the district to confirm contract language related to Juneteenth (a new federal/state holiday) and the mechanism for recognizing weekend holidays in staff contracts. Administration told the committee it would consult counsel and the bargaining units and return with recommended language and teacher survey results.
The committee did not vote on the calendar at the meeting and instructed staff to post a draft calendar for public comment and to return with refined data and calendar options at the next meeting.
