Commissioner Joel reported that a zoning administrator approved a retail sales permit last week for a firearms dealer to operate in a roughly 100‑square‑foot interior space in the Aldergrove Industrial Park. Joel said the applicant is a certified firearms instructor and expects 5–10 sales per month but noted the approval contained no limit on the number of transactions and raised concerns about whether federal, state or local conditions were imposed to manage safety and liability.
Joel also raised insurance concerns, saying he understood 'federal law requires a minimum of $1,000,000 of liability insurance' and suggested the commission might consider asking for a higher requirement as a condition of approval. Staff cautioned that the meeting's Correspondence and Communications segment is not the appropriate forum for full deliberation on appeals and noted a 10‑day window from the date of approval to initiate an appeal. Staff said a member of the public can initiate an appeal and, if a majority of commissioners wished formal appeal action, staff could administratively initiate the appeal.
No formal appeal motion was filed at the meeting; commissioners opted to advise members of the public of the appeal pathway and to agendize any formal commission action in a later meeting if desired. Staff said they will act administratively if a clear majority asks them to pursue an appeal.
