Arcata council approves three-year Tandem Mobility amendment to add two e‑bike stations

The Arcata City Council on Jan. 21 approved an amendment to its bike-share contract with Tandem Mobility LLC to add two additional e-bike stations and extend the contract term for three years.
City engineer Netra Khatri described the program’s history, partners and funding: the city and Cal Poly Humboldt launched initial stations, federal grants and partner funding were used to expand the network, and the amendment was funded in part by grants with a required city match. Khatri told the council the city currently operates 10 stations with roughly 50 bikes and has added 10 e-bikes on a trial basis.
“E-bikes will be able to dock at any of the stations,” Khatri said, and noted the city and operator can set a maximum speed limit for safety. Staff confirmed the e-bikes will be charged and maintained locally by program maintenance staff.
Councilmember Sarah Schaeffer moved to approve the amendment; Councilmember Stillman seconded and the motion passed on a voice vote. The approved amendment authorizes a three-year term and program funding up to $137,500 per program year as presented in the staff report.
Council and public commenters praised the program for expanding transportation options and noted local maintenance work provided jobs. Several speakers encouraged intercity coordination with neighboring jurisdictions and asked staff to share station-usage data in a future report.
