Board approves consent agenda, personnel changes and finance item; honors retirees and PTO updates

The Bethel Park School District Board of School Directors approved a slate of routine and personnel actions Monday evening and heard community and PTO reports.
The board moved and approved items 1 through 39 on the consent agenda (motion by Mister Scalzo, second by Mister McGregor); voting opened and the motion passed 9–0. Under personnel, the board approved three items — personnel appointments, acceptance of resignations and approval of EDR responsibility for the 2025–26 school year; Mister McGregor moved the personnel package, seconded by Mister Scalzo, and the motion passed 9–0.
The finance committee presented one item: approval of school‑sponsored overnight educational activities. Mister Christiansen disclosed he would abstain because his wife is one of the chaperones covered by the item; the motion passed with eight yeses and one abstain.
Separately, the board recognized nine retirees slated for approval on the agenda, including Pamela Backstrom (noontime aide and paraprofessional), James Beckwith (bus driver, retired Jan. 2), Sandy Blackmore (para and aide unit vice president with service since 2001), Jen Callahan (long‑time special education teacher), Tracy Ford (school nurse/paraprofessional), Donna Hope (health services nurse floater) and others. The superintendent read service histories and the board thanked the staff for their service.
The board also received reports from student government and PTO representatives. A student government speaker described recent Christmas activities and plans for a kindness‑focused 'wish week.' The PTO representative reported school fundraisers and events across the district and said the NAMS holiday charity carnival raised $13,140 for local charities.
Policy 622 (GASB Statement 34 policy) was presented for its first of three readings; the proposed change raises the minimum threshold for posting federal bid/quote guidelines to $15,000, and a board member asked whether an internal line describing 'noncapitalized assets greater than 1000 but less than 5' should be adjusted to match the rewritten threshold.
There were no public commenters calling in or addressing the board during the public comment period. A community speaker later reminded residents about an 'America 250' event scheduled for Feb. 7 at the Bethel Park Historical Society.
The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn.
