The Bethel Park School District’s technology director outlined multiple infrastructure and security upgrades Monday, reporting a completed high‑school network overhaul, new classroom equipment plans for elementary schools and expanded campus security monitoring.
"Everything from the wireless access points to the edge switching all the way down to the core switching" at the high school has been upgraded, the technology director said, adding that the district is working with fiber provider DQE to extend a connection from the high school to an elementary campus to provide redundancy and a secondary backup location in case of damage to the primary site.
For classrooms, the district plans standard equipment that will include a 75‑inch interactive panel, a Voice over IP phone, an amplified sound system with a wireless teacher microphone and a Wi‑Fi 7 capable access point in every classroom. The technology director said elementary installations are underway and contractors are installing equipment.
On campus security, the district has increased exterior camera coverage and installed multiple license‑plate readers at the high school campus entrances, with plans to deploy similar coverage at the intermediate and elementary campuses.
The district reported it implemented the FOCUS student information system on an expedited schedule (project started January 2025 with a full rollout in August 2025) and plans to add features including threat assessment, positive behavior supports and student badges. The technology director said an AI steering committee developed guidelines the board approved in August, and the district has a cyber incident response plan and team in place.
The district also reported an approved E‑rate Category 1 construction build‑out application for the elementary school and said its current E‑rate funding level is 50 percent; the district noted it has started a new five‑year E‑rate cycle.
Security tooling was discussed: the district has rolled out Sophos MDR (managed detection and response) as a 24/7/365 monitored service to improve response to suspicious network activity. A board member who observed classroom monitoring software in action said the demonstration showed effective teacher–student interaction and an extra security layer.
The technology director outlined budget planning for 2026–27 device replacement and noted a planned transition at the high school from Windows devices back to Chromebooks for consistency and budget savings. He also said ongoing work includes projector replacements and an administrative move to the NAMS campus.
Board members asked clarifying questions about implementation and vendor software; the technology director acknowledged a few 'speed bumps' during an expedited SIS rollout and said the department is addressing remaining items.
