Hialeah proclaims Epilepsy Alliance of Florida Day; students honored for Catholic Schools Week

At its Jan. 27 meeting the Hialeah City Council presented a proclamation recognizing Jan. 26, 2026 as Epilepsy Alliance of Florida Day in the city. The clerk read the proclamation, noting Epilepsy Alliance Florida’s history in the state and the organization’s role in awareness and support for people and families impacted by epilepsy.
Luis Moreno, who identified himself as a prevention specialist with Epilepsy Alliance, thanked the council and described public-education work in schools, saying the statistic "1 in 26" reflects the proportion of people who will develop epilepsy in their lifetime and stressing the importance of awareness and rapid response by first responders.
The council also heard student speakers from local Catholic schools recognizing Catholic Schools Week. Eighth-graders Jose Diaz and Adrian Morales spoke about how Catholic education has shaped their character, service and academic focus. Council members and the mayor praised the students' courage for speaking in public and said the city would consider issuing a proclamation recognizing Catholic Schools Week and Saint John the Apostle Catholic School’s 75-year legacy in Hialeah.
The council requested staff follow up on the proclamations and thanked school representatives and Epilepsy Alliance staff for their community work.
