Kimberly Jackson, president of the New Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, told the Opelika City Council the chapter is donating feminine-hygiene products to Opelika City Schools and introduced Janelle Royston to list school and community recipients.
"We are elated to be here tonight to share in this presentation on the actual initiative that we've been working on with the city council," Jackson said. Royston listed recipient sites including Opelika High School, Opelika Middle School, Fox Run, Opelika Learning Center, Girls Step and the Boys and Girls Club.
Presenters framed the gift as part of a broader effort to combat period poverty in the local community and thanked the council for receiving the donation. No formal vote was required for the presentation.
The donation was made during the council's work session before the regular meeting; presenters said the effort complements school-based supports and community partners already involved with students. The council did not take formal action on the donation during the meeting.
The council packet materials or follow-up staff reports to clarify the number of items donated were not provided in the verbal presentation; the transcript's stated quantity was unclear and is therefore reported as not specified.
