Planning board approves Omaha Public Schools sign amendment for Burke Boulevard with smaller sign area and ZBA waivers expected

The Planning Board approved a major amendment for Omaha Public Schools to modify signage at Burke Boulevard, voting in favor after the school reduced the proposed sign area and staff recommended approval.
Lenora Nelson of Omaha Public Schools told the board the proposed sign area had been reduced from 368.25 square feet to 258 square feet and that overall sign budget and square footage were cut significantly; in return the applicant requested a modest 6‑inch increase in permitted wall height to ease maintenance. "We have reduced that to 258 square feet," Nelson said during her presentation.
Nearby residents raised concerns about the sign’s scale and nighttime illumination. David Hahn told the board the proposed sign would appear “more like a billboard” and asked whether all existing campus signage had been counted in the total square footage. Staff confirmed the updated sizes and said the sign would have to comply with lighting standards; staff recommended approval with the expectation that the applicant obtain any necessary Zoning Board of Appeals waivers.
The board approved the amendment; the applicant will carry the revised sign dimensions forward to the Zoning Board of Appeals for any necessary waivers.
