The Omaha Planning Board heard opposition from adjacent neighbors over a proposed electronic sign for Pacific Hills Lutheran Church at 1110 S. 90th St., centering on brightness and light spill into nearby homes and possible safety concerns for teenage drivers at nearby Westside High School.
Opponent Charlie Lycus told the board the signs proposed 7,100 K lighting would cause glare and shine into bedrooms; Bridal Burns and others said prior exterior lighting from the church already produced undesired spill onto yards. Sign vendor Gabby Ryan of Sign Works said the 7,100 K indicated color temperature can be reduced to 4,500 K and that the proposed WatchFire digital module automatically dims at sunset. Church members said they would work with neighbors to address the existing parking-lot light by tilting or shielding it.
Staff described updated electronic-message standards (brightness limits, automatic dimming, prohibitions on moving/scrolling video) and recommended approval of the major amendment to the conditional use permit subject to the recommendations eight conditions. After discussion, the board approved the amendment 6-0.
