Brigham City council members on Feb. 5 approved a resolution to declare roughly 30 two‑way radios surplus and donate them to Box Elder County so the county can equip its deputies to communicate with city officers.
Tom Cotter, representing Box Elder County, asked the council to surplus the radios under the city's procurement and disposal policies, explaining the radios are encrypted and would allow communication between county deputies and city officers. "So we have around... 30 radios that the city is no longer using," Cotter said, adding that the donation would allow the county to avoid an approximately $18,000 purchase.
Council member Smith moved the resolution and Council member Jeffries seconded. The council approved the motion by voice vote; no roll‑call tally was recorded in the public audio. During discussion a council member noted similar radios had been listed on GovDeals for about $200 each as a used price.
The council chair said the donation would be brought up by the county commission in their public comment and expressed appreciation to county staff for the proposed transfer.
