Scottsdale library board outlines outreach, new services and grants

Library Director Michael Beck and Library Board Chair Dr. Freda Hartman presented the board's year-two report to the City Council on Aug. 26, highlighting efforts to expand access and services across Scottsdale's library system.
Beck summarized key accomplishments including a redesigned website intended to increase accessibility, the Mustang story wall funded from general funds and grants, expanded Hold-It lockers and second-chance collections at senior centers, and partnerships with nonprofits to pilot lending-library concepts. The board also described outreach at city events and a series of grants (five LSTA grants totaling nearly $50,000) that will fund pilot programs such as author workshops and college-and-career resources.
Dr. Freda Hartman and Tara Hartman outlined the board's community-engagement work: board members serve as liaisons to branches, participate in events, review and advise on policy updates (including rules of conduct), and attend conferences to bring library trends back to the community. The council thanked the board for its work and asked staff to continue pursuing partnerships such as ReadOn Arizona and college-career programming tied to Scottsdale Unified School District.
The presentation closed with council members expressing appreciation for seed-library efforts and other community-facing initiatives.
