Two city boards presented annual updates to the council on Aug. 25. The Board of Adjustment reported five meetings and eight cases in the last year; chair Jason Chichrone said three cases were approved and five denied, and recommended more targeted qualifications and refresher training for a young board.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission reviewed accomplishments including a 2024 update to the ecological-resource plan, the Browns Ranch Interpretive Trail (the city's first trail dedicated to cultural resources), and a recommended five-year preserve-improvement plan funded through the parks-and-preserve sales tax. Vice chair Savannah Engeling said the commission and staff had continued wildfire and fuel-mitigation work across about 94 corridor miles or 335 acres, and noted a Rio Verde Drive wildlife overpass feasibility study is underway.
Councilmembers thanked commissioners and staff for their work and accepted the reports for the record.
