Commission approves Tangent Materials special use for outdoor storage at Grid campus

The Montgomery Planning and Zoning Commission approved a special-use permit to allow outdoor storage for Tangent Materials at Buildings B and K on the Grid campus, with conditions governing fencing, permitted storage locations and required permits.
Staff told the commission that Tangent, a plastics manufacturer and distribution operator consolidating operations to the Grid campus, submitted the application after the company began storing pallets and materials outside as it expanded. The Grid campus was annexed under a planned-unit-development ordinance adopted in January 2022; the PUD requires special use approval for outdoor storage and allows modified screening requirements.
Staff recommended approval conditioned on obtaining building permits for outdoor storage fencing, restricting storage of materials and equipment to the areas identified on the submitted site plans, and adopting the findings of fact in the staff report. Staff also reported the fire district reviewed fencing access and the petitioner revised plans to address gate access points.
Rocky Bowling, facilities manager at the Montgomery campus, identified himself during the public hearing and offered no public opposition. There were no other public comments opposing the application.
On a roll-call vote the commission approved the special use; staff said the item will be forwarded to the Village Board on Monday, Feb. 9 for final consideration.
The action allows Tangent to formalize the outdoor storage already in use at the site subject to standard permitting and compliance with the approved site-plan locations and fencing details.
