The Pocatello City Council voted Feb. 5 to accept donated surveillance equipment for use in human-trafficking investigations and authorized the mayor to sign related documents subject to legal review.
A police representative described the equipment as tools to protect ongoing investigations into trafficking. Council members asked whether the system streams live data to state or federal partners and whether the city anticipates ongoing software or maintenance costs. The police representative said the feed "is a live feed, but it only goes to us," and clarified it is used only for ongoing investigations, not continuous public monitoring. The department also said it does not anticipate ongoing maintenance costs at this time and cited prior cooperative equipment and funding relationships with Operation Underground Railroad.
Councilwoman Swanson moved to accept the donation; Councilman Mangum seconded. The council approved the donation by roll call vote.
Next steps: Legal will complete review and the mayor will sign acceptance documents; the police department will operate the equipment under existing investigative procedures.
