Middleton alder highlights library event to help property owners remove discriminatory deed covenants

Alder Myers told the Middleton Common Council that a library event on Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. will offer local homeowners information and hands-on help to remove racially discriminatory deed covenants from property records.
Myers said trained volunteers and notaries will be available to help residents complete a discharge-and-release form; the city will submit completed forms to the Dane County Register of Deeds and recording fees will be waived. The effort was made possible by grant funding from the Wisconsin Realtors Association Foundation, Myers said.
The council did not take formal action at this meeting but Myers encouraged homeowners who suspect their deeds contain discriminatory restrictions to attend the library session for assistance.
