Mercer County commissioners voted Feb. 4 to solicit bids for repair or replacement of the Golden Valley shop roof after staff reported the roof’s condition had worsened and insulation was damaged.
The county’s facilities presenter, Speaker 6, described the roof as progressively leaking and recommended total replacement rather than repeated patching. "Their recommendation is...just do the whole roof and be done with it," Speaker 6 said. Commissioners discussed letting Western Steel (a local metal-roofing contractor that previously worked in the area) and other firms bid; Speaker 6 and others said bids should allow both options so contractors could recommend either repair or full replacement.
The board directed staff to advertise the project in two publications (two weeks) and clarified bid language should permit a repair estimate and a replacement estimate. Speaker 3 moved to place the Golden Valley shop roof "out on bids" specifying repair or replacement; the motion was seconded and carried with aye votes recorded.
Commissioners noted that allowing repair bids could reduce short-term cost but leave recurrence risk, while replacement would address long-term performance. The board did not award a contract at the meeting; staff will return with bid results for a future award decision.
