Scott County approves contingency grants for two town celebrations and accepts several state grants

The Scott County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 approved contingency grants to support two small-town celebrations and accepted several grant awards for county programs.
The board voted to grant $2,000 from the county’s contingency fund to Dungannon’s Fourth of July celebration after Mayor Melissa Gillenwater described plans for free children’s activities and two bands. “We would like $2,000 if possible,” Gillenwater told the board during the citizen-expression period. The motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
In a separate request during the meeting, the board approved a motion to increase an annual contingency appropriation to support community events and later accepted multiple competitive grants. County staff presented awards including a Virginia DEQ litter‑prevention and recycling grant (approximately $7,006.83 appropriation), Virginia DCJS awards for the sheriff’s office (two grants totaling $500,000 each for Ceasefire and forensic/analytical technology), a VSTOP formula grant of $66,667, and a Virginia Department of Fire Programs personal-protective-equipment grant of $100,000. The board moved and approved acceptance and the required appropriations by voice vote.
Board members said the awards will be assigned to established budget codes and routed through the county’s normal grant-accounting procedures. County staff indicated most of the grants are reimbursements and will be entered in Munis once invoices are submitted.
