County accepts $406,000 USDA grant for ambulances; will match with SPLOST funds and issue EMS RFP

County staff said the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development awarded $406,000 to the county to replace two ambulances under a community facilities program. Kyle (EMS) told commissioners updated vendor quotes reduced chassis costs and lowered the overall estimate from an earlier $826,724.50 figure to about $797,974.51. After the $406,000 grant, the remaining local/SPLOST match needed is $391,974.51.
The board added acceptance of the grant and the SPLOST match authorization to the consent agenda; commissioners later approved it. Kyle said trade‑in allowances for existing monitors and chassis were included and that the county worked to reduce costs where possible.
Separately, county staff announced an RFP for emergency medical services to solicit proposals for ambulance providers and service models. The RFP was scheduled for release on Feb. 9 with proposal returns in late March and a recommendation expected at the May meeting; contract action would follow after negotiations.
Commissioners said ensuring continuity of service and competitive pricing are the priorities while protecting response times and patient care. The RFP process will give the county multiple options for structuring EMS delivery going forward.
