Fire Chief Thompson told the council the department issues two sets of protective clothing to 98 members and the purchase would replace a portion of aging sets and provide full gear for three new hires. “We have 98 members that are issued protective clothing, and we issue each of those members two sets for our cancer action step,” Thompson said. He added the department is regulated by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and must replace gear every 10 years.
Chief Thompson said a full set includes coats, pants, firefighting boots, suspenders, gloves, helmets and hoods, and that inspections occur every two years. He estimated it costs roughly $15,000 per member to outfit an individual with a full set of gear.
Councilmembers asked technical questions about harness ratings and replacement schedules during the discussion. A motion to approve the item was made and seconded and the council voted to approve the purchase; the roll-call vote tally was not provided in the record.
The purchase authorizes the city manager to execute the contract for the gear; the council followed the item by moving into an executive session.
