Cemetery group outlines 250th-anniversary monument; commissioners grant permission to list county as contributor

Ed Taylor, president of the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization, told Allegany County commissioners about plans for a new county monument to mark the United States' 250th anniversary and to honor the organization's deceased members.
Taylor said the monument will include engravings tracing Allegany County history from 1789 to the present, weigh about 23.5 tons and incorporate finials donated by the county from the old Allegany High School demolition. He said a near-life-size marble statue of Saint Michael is on a freighter from Rome and expected to arrive at the Port of Savannah before the end of the month; Frostburg Memorials will complete engravings and the monument is scheduled to be unveiled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.
Taylor asked for verbal permission to list 'Allegany County commissioners' as a contributor and the board granted that permission during public comment.
