Committee approves $342,000 Stryker equipment package to reduce surgical delays
Summary
The finance committee approved the purchase of 75 Stryker items for surgical service lines — negotiated from $429,500 to about $342,000 — citing the immediate need for four TPx drills because existing drills are end‑of‑life and nonrepairable.

Dr. Joshua Baxter presented a purchase request for 75 pieces of Stryker equipment to support oral/maxillofacial, podiatry and orthopedic service lines and to enable expansion of ENT services. Baxter said the initial proposal was $429,500 but that, by combining service lines and negotiating with the vendor, he reduced the price to about $342,000, producing roughly $86,000 in savings for the hospital.
Baxter emphasized an operational need for four TPx drills because the hospital currently has only two drills that are at end of life and are no longer repairable; when a drill is in use, turnover can take two to three hours, creating case delays. The purchase is intended to increase throughput and avoid scheduling bottlenecks.
Committee members asked whether the hospital evaluated other vendors and how the purchase will be reflected in the capital budget. Baxter said the clinicians prefer the current vendor and that bundling equipment across service lines generated the cost savings; staff agreed to include vendor‑selection rationale in future packets. A motion to approve the Stryker purchase was made by a committee member, seconded, and carried by voice vote.
