Board members at the Aug. 21 budget workshop said the township has added about 85 full-time positions since 2022 and asked staff for a detailed breakdown of where those positions were allocated.
Chairman Bailey and several directors proposed a temporary freeze on new hires for the current budget year — allowing replacements for vacancies but delaying additions of authorized but unfilled positions. Monique Sharp told the board that, of 23 initially requested positions during the budget process, staff narrowed the list to three positions for consideration this cycle: a fire fleet mechanic (budgeted at about $104,000), a radio analyst to maintain emergency-radio equipment, and a streetscape specialist to let the arborist focus on forest health.
Sharp cautioned that some positions are necessary to avoid service-level impacts, noting the radio analyst role is tied to a large increase in equipment the IT team must maintain. Directors asked staff to identify programmatic savings, sponsorship opportunities and other one-time revenue sources to offset recurring costs. One director suggested cutting discretionary community items and advertising to find small savings.
Why it matters: adding new permanent positions increases recurring operating costs and affects long-term budgets and reserves. The board directed staff to bring back a process and a detailed breakdown of positions and program impacts for a year-long review.
