Brentwood approves $694,616 design agreement for Old Smyrna Road Phase I

The project will build a new roadway segment parallel to the historic Old Smyrna Road, beginning at the roundabout at Jones Parkway and tying back to the existing road roughly 450 feet east of Harlan Jones. Staff said Alternative A led public feedback with approximately 84% support in a prior survey.
The design scope includes traffic-calming and speed-control features, enhanced bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and a lighting plan for the new roadway portion. Commissioners and staff emphasized care around a smaller historic cemetery affected by planned right-of-way acquisition; the record shows the intent to preserve and potentially improve that site’s maintenance during design and acquisition work. Staff provided an anticipated schedule: design completion targeted in May with right-of-way plans by November and an expected construction start the following summer, subject to right-of-way acquisition timelines.
The commission asked technical questions about lane widths, separation treatments for bicycle lanes (concrete ribbon curb), and inclusion of lighting in the contract. Staff said right-of-way acquisition will be managed internally and noted potential annexation coordination where portions of the road remain in the county. The design contract will not include right-of-way acquisition costs.
