Performing Arts Society asks Woodlands Township to explore cultural district and arts center

Gary Heath, president of The Woodlands Performing Arts Society, told the township board on Nov. 14 that the nonprofit has received its formal designation and urged the board to consider pursuing Texas cultural-district designation and researching a performing arts center for The Woodlands.

"We've been taking the lead in researching the possibility of The Woodlands becoming a cultural district in the state of Texas," Heath said, and asked the board to consider forming an advisory council of community members to help research a performing arts center and related programming. Heath highlighted examples he and his group reviewed — the Pablo Center in Eau Claire and the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center — and suggested events such as a jazz crawl to expand the community’s cultural footprint and economic opportunities.

Chairman Bailey thanked Heath and said staff is already doing "deep, deep dives" on the issue. A director requested that the Economic Development Committee and Visit The Woodlands return to the full board with information about the project; another director supported forming a community advisory council to assist research. No formal board action was taken; the request for follow-up will be placed on a future agenda so the incoming board can review strategic planning and next steps.

Heath emphasized community support and volunteer capacity to help with research and outreach, and provided board members with a packet of materials describing cultural-district goals and examples of performing arts centers. The board also acknowledged related community events and staffing impacts tied to recent reforestation and holiday-lighting preparations discussed later in the meeting.
