AG vows to protect seniors and consumers from scams, flags crypto and data-breach challenges

Sunday said the Bureau of Consumer Protection has opened more than 10,000 senior-related cases in the past year and that the office will integrate cryptocurrency information into its senior-scam outreach. He described cryptocurrency fraud as difficult to regulate and supported exploring state-level consumer protections and penalties.
"Additional penalties, especially for corporations, would certainly be what's needed," Sunday told the committee when asked about stronger fines, mandatory restitution or other tools to change corporate behavior after data breaches.
AG staff said Pennsylvania has been a leader in consumer-protection recoveries and that the office can pursue remedies where appropriate, but noted technical and jurisdictional limits when conduct occurs primarily online or outside the state. Sunday offered to meet legislators to craft specific statutory language and described a willingness to consider expanded enforcement authority tied to data security failures.
The AG's office also said it will incorporate cryptocurrency-focused content into senior-scam presentations and outreach events.
