House adopts amendment to update age-appropriate design code in social media bill

The South Carolina House adopted Amendment 1A to its earlier work on the South Carolina Social Media Regulation Act during floor action on Jan. 20, restoring updated "age-appropriate design code" language and removing parental-consent provisions noted in the Senate's substituted text.
Mister Travis Moore, recognized to explain the amendment on the floor, said the original House version had enacted broader protections and an age-appropriate design standard for minors. He urged adoption of the amendment, telling members the amendment would "strike their age appropriate design code and put in the updated language" and that the House removed parental-consent language because of recent federal cases.
After brief questions from members, the House adopted the amendment; the clerk reported the roll-call tabulation as 112 to 0.
The amendment follows a larger, multi-stage legislative process in which the House previously passed a version of the social media bill and the Senate substituted its own language. The adopted amendment replaces the Senate's older language with updated design-code text that the House's sponsors and stakeholders favor. With the amendment adopted, the bill was returned to the Senate for further action.
