CEC 28 votes in two new members after executive-session vetting

The Community Education Council (CEC) for New York City Geographic District 28 unanimously approved two appointments during its Jan. 8 business session.

After an executive-session vetting process, the council voted to appoint Cecily Shu to a council vacancy. Recording Secretary Chantal Chambers conducted a roll-call vote; the recorded votes were all in the affirmative, and President Quintin Mezzetin welcomed her to the council. "Welcome to District 28 Education Council," Mezzetin said after the tally.

Shortly afterward the council held a second roll-call vote and approved Alex Segura for a separate vacancy; that motion also passed unanimously. The recording of both votes shows every member present voting yes.

The council moved the votes after first convening an executive session to privately discuss candidate qualifications and return to the public meeting to record outcomes. The motion to enter the executive session was made and seconded during the business portion of the meeting.

Both new members offered brief remarks following their appointments. Cecily Shu thanked the council and said she looked forward to "partnering with you guys and learning from everyone." The council chair said the appointments will be reflected in meeting rosters and that the new members should expect orientation and liaison duties tied to the council's ongoing work.

Next steps: the CEC will update its membership roster and assign liaison responsibilities. The council also said it will continue to post meeting agendas and materials for transparency, and new members will be integrated into upcoming substantive agenda items including capital planning and the chancellor town hall logistics.
