Parent asks Wellington education committee to champion shade-structure grant for New Horizons Elementary

At the Village of Wellington Education Committee meeting, Sonia Garate, a member of New Horizons Elementary’s SAC, asked the committee to support funding and grant applications for a playground shade structure to make outdoor recess safer and more appealing.
"It's called a shade structure," Garate said, explaining that New Horizons currently has limited shade on playground areas and that improved shade would encourage students to use outdoor recess safely. She said the school has about $8,000 in local funds but that a full shade structure would cost substantially more.
Garate asked the committee to champion the project and suggested possible pathways including the American Academy of Dermatology grant, local businesses, the Chamber, the Rotary Club and the Wellington Foundation. Committee members responded that while the education committee does not have direct capital funds to allocate, they could promote the application and refer the request to the village council and community partners.
Committee staff offered practical next steps: Garate should email project information to staff (Ian was cited as the point of contact) so the committee can share the proposal with council contacts and local civic organizations. "We can certainly be champions for that," one committee member said.
The request drew applause from attendees and the committee encouraged continued collaboration between SAC members, PTAs and village staff to pursue grants and local sponsorships.
