Lindon council to draft pickleball lighting policy after resident complaints

LINDON — Councilmembers on Feb. 2 directed Parks staff to draft a formal policy on pickleball court lighting after residents raised concerns about late‑night lights and inconsistent posted hours at different parks.
Parks & Recreation Director Heath presented usage data and comparative hours from nearby cities, telling the council he wanted to know if members "are interested in having it standardized across the city? 10PM, the lights go off, people can play till 10PM," he said. Heath noted several neighbors near Creekside Park asked for a 9:30 p.m. cutoff, and that some signs posted by private individuals have created confusion about official hours.
Councilmembers debated tradeoffs between early‑morning player access and neighbors’ sleep and work schedules. Councilmember Cole Hooley and others said they were open to site‑specific hours where courts are close to homes; Councilmember Van Broderick suggested installing one‑hour timers so lights don’t remain on when courts are empty.
Heath said most lights are on timers and that some parks already use hour timers that require someone to reactivate lights when players return, which limits continuous overnight operation. He told the council staff will draft a department policy, standardize signs to match adopted hours and consider additional mitigation (for example, acoustic barriers and LED fixture adjustments) at parks with closer residences.
No formal action was taken; staff will return with a proposed policy for council consideration and with standardized signage recommendations.
