Commission proclaims Amateur Radio Week and highlights emergency communications volunteer effort

The Williamson County Commission read and adopted a proclamation declaring June 22 through June 28, 2008, as Amateur Radio Week in Williamson County and invited the public to an Amateur Radio Field Day exercise.
Mayor Rogers Anderson read the proclamation and introduced volunteer emergency-communications leaders. Myron Manker and Jeff Standifer described the local organization, and a volunteer noted the group had grown from roughly six active members in earlier years to about 165 active members who have completed background checks and NIMS training to serve in emergencies. “We are sincerely appreciative of your support,” one speaker said of county leaders' backing of the volunteer effort. The Field Day exercise was scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at the Ag Expo Park and run for 24 hours; the event is open to the public.
County officials praised the group's contributions during local emergencies, including response during the Fairview tornado, and encouraged commissioners and residents to visit the field site to learn about amateur radio emergency communications.
