City officials opened the civic center as a temporary warming center after a local church experienced heating problems, the mayor said.
The mayor told the council the American Red Cross is running the facility and that about five or six people used it the previous night. He said the Red Cross was closing for the day when he spoke and that the organization has staffing challenges and may need volunteers for upcoming nights. Local churches provided food and supplies for people who stayed at the civic center, the mayor added.
The mayor thanked the Red Cross and local congregations for their assistance and asked for volunteers to help support the warming center over the weekend.
