Canal Convergence drew about 130,000 visitors in 2024; organizers preview 'Showtime' for 2025

Jennifer Gill reviewed Canal Convergence 2024 to the Tourism Development Commission on Aug. 19, saying the waterfront event (Nov. 8–17) attracted just over 130,000 visitors and hosted more than 4,000 workshop attendees. She said 21% of the audience this year was from out of state, with top origin states including California, Texas, Illinois, Colorado and Florida.
Gill highlighted programming innovations: a first‑ever drone performance staged close to the audience over the water (three performances), eight large physical artworks installed by a 16‑person install team over 10–12 days, a mini film festival and a partnership with Arizona State University for a sustainable fashion show. She noted an award (CODA merit award) for the installation 'Molecules' by Urban Conga and said the event produced 71 media placements—about double 2023—and roughly 1,100,000 social impressions with more than 31,000 engagements on Scottsdale Arts posts.
Geofencing analysis showed spikes in visits to adjacent destinations during the 10‑day event window—Fashion Square recorded nearly 100,000 more visits across the Canal Convergence dates than the prior 10 days. Gill said the event also boosted local restaurants and businesses near the canal and that tours and special events (many sold out) expanded the festival's reach.
Looking ahead, Gill previewed Canal Convergence 2025 with the theme 'Showtime' (Nov. 7–16). Planned features include larger light‑based installations (a 'long wave' piece described as 330 feet long and 222 feet in diameter), a 'big TV' installation that converts into a performance stage, additional roaming performances and more live music and dance. Gill also said planning has begun for Canal Convergence 2026 with programming tied to Scottsdale's 75th anniversary and an artist residency at Cattle Track.
Commissioners thanked Gill for the overview and noted the value of the event in drawing visitors and supporting local businesses. Gill said more detailed metrics and assets are available for commissioners who want follow‑up information.
