Board approves Measure H projects, auditorium lighting upgrade and multiple architectural contracts

The Brea Olinda Unified School District board approved a series of Measure H–funded projects and related contracts, moving forward with upgrades to school facilities, athletic fields and buildings.
The board authorized an agreement with Apollo Electric for auditorium and theatrical stage lighting upgrades at Brea Linda High School. Facilities staff said the lowest bid was $756,000 and recommended a 15% contingency for budgeting, which brought the internal budget line to $869,000; the board approved the purchase order and associated motion by a 5-0 vote. The Apollo Electric item followed public comment from Annie Strobel, the new theater technician at Brea Linda High, who had earlier told the board she was limiting students’ access to lighting tasks because of safety concerns and outdated fixtures.
Separately, trustees approved multiple architectural and engineering agreements with Studio Plus for projects including a playground replacement and ADA upgrades at Ari Vista Elementary, a new multipurpose building and kitchen at Falcon Academy of Science and Technology (budget request cited at roughly $640,000 including estimated reimbursables and DSA fees), and prefabricated classroom and early-childhood learning building design work. Each Studio Plus agreement passed on unanimous votes.
The board also approved combined architectural-fee requests with PJHM Architects to address path-of-travel accessibility and athletic facility upgrades at Brea (Brealinda/Brea) High School and for modernization work at Brea Junior High. Facilities staff presented an estimated $1.7 million architectural-fee request to cover consolidated scopes, geotechnical and consultant fees and anticipated DSA fees; trustees approved the request 5-0.
Several other items passed by unanimous vote: an agreement with CDW Government for technology purchases, an increased agreement for Darren Howard school bus driver training services, and an increased scope with Public Economics for redevelopment consulting. Facilities staff noted costs are subject to escalation tied to recent regional construction pressures and that schedules will be coordinated with school sites to minimize disruption.
