Chesterfield County Council on Oct. 2 unanimously approved a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month after local advocates presented statistics and a schedule of outreach events.
Stacy Short, county coordinator for PD Coalition, cited national figures from the CDC and reported that PD Coalition served 85 domestic-violence victims in Chesterfield County between October 2023 and September 2024 — a figure she said counts people who sought help from her organization. Short emphasized that 85 represents victims who came forward and asked council for continued support for education and prevention.
Trauma advocate Ethel Moore described planned October events, including a clergy roundtable on Oct. 4, a "Pieces of Me" arts activity in Pageland, a senior DV Bingo session, a "Finding Your Voice" open mic at the Chesterfield YMCA on Oct. 10, Wear Purple Day on Oct. 17, and a noon balloon release at Centennial Park in Cheraw on Oct. 17. Moore asked council members and the community to participate and offered to provide printed packets and door hangers.
Councilman Rivers moved the proclamation, the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The council did not appropriate funds in the recorded remarks; the action was a formal proclamation and endorsement of awareness activities.
