The Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center Commission approved an onboarding document for new board members and staff at its meeting, adopting a packet intended to standardize orientation and clarify administrative procedures.
Dr. McDonald, who introduced the three-part package and moved to approve the onboarding document, said, "I'll make a motion that we adopt the onboarding document that's in the packet and make it part of our procedures as we move forward." The motion was seconded and the board approved it by roll call.
Discussion focused on whether an ID badge should be required. Board members asked when and why a badge would be used; HR and Sonya Stephenson explained the badges are an optional security measure used across county boards. Stephenson said she reviews board agendas to anticipate HR questions and told the commission the badges help building security identify who "has a purpose in" county facilities.
Lynn Duke presented operational details included in the onboarding packet, including instructions for finding monthly public-safety reports and past meeting materials online. Duke reported current staffing levels for the detention unit and described scheduling impacts from employees on leave. The board accepted the onboarding and the accompanying staff reports with no objection.
The commission directed staff to post the onboarding document to the board’s web page and to circulate the packet to members as needed for future reference.
