Committee tables wage-resolution for clerk of courts and sheriff after debate over comparables and timing

The finance director presented a multi-year wage schedule and comparative analysis recommending that the clerk of courts' pay be adjusted to align with other elected officials (proposed 4% increases in 2027 and 2028, then 2% in 2029 and 2030) and that the sheriff receive a 2% increase each year of the term. The presentation reviewed prior resolution history (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) and comparisons with six peer counties.

Supervisors raised multiple concerns. One supervisor argued two percent may be insufficient given the sheriff's supervisory responsibilities and pointed to past parity issues where the chief deputy's pay exceeded the sheriff's; the sheriff spoke about recruitment and competition for staff, noting that department wage steps and cost-of-living adjustments for non-elected staff can cause elected-official wages to fall behind over a four-year term. Another supervisor warned of a "snowball effect" when neighboring counties raise wages and the sample comparables replicate that increase.

Questions were also raised about whether package materials were circulated with sufficient lead time; several members said the wage resolution was posted the morning of the meeting and asked for more time and additional data, including comparisons to chief-deputy pay and starting salaries for department heads. Supervisor Edwards moved to table the resolution; the motion passed by voice vote and the item will return to committee next month with additional detail requested by members.
