Summary
Administrators proposed creating a 2026 capital project to relocate a modular life‑skills apartment serving about 20 students into the high school, engage KCBA Architects, and aim for availability at the start of the 2026–27 school year while acknowledging ADA and construction challenges.
Mr. Stone described an administration recommendation to create a capital project in 2026 to relocate the district’s life‑skills apartment—currently housed in a modular classroom outside the high school—into the main high school building. The modular apartment serves approximately 20 students who participate in transition programming to learn independent living skills. "Modular classrooms are not intended to be permanent, and so, we want to ensure the sustainability of the program in a facility that is appropriate for our students," Stone said.
Administration said KCBA Architects will assist with design and budget development and that the goal is to have the apartment available for the 2026–27 school year. Officials noted challenges in updating a 1991 building to 2026 ADA standards, including work above ceilings and behind walls and potential changes to doorways; they described engaging the architect to develop a design, procurement plan and schedule and expected to present firm numbers at the Feb. 23 board meeting. The board asked no questions during the work session and the administration said it would bring the recommendation to the Feb. 23 legislative meeting.
