Summary
Wonder Gardens presented a ‘Renew the Wonder’ update including the completed Otter Grotto (visitor surge), a proposed animal care center, a walk‑through aviary funded by a $135,000 donation, a state appropriation of $1,300,000 for an event building, and other donor‑supported renovations; council signaled support and asked staff to coordinate permitting.
Representatives of the Bonita Wonder Gardens presented a multi‑project update to the council, describing completed work, donor support and several planned capital projects intended to increase visitation and create new revenue streams.
Neil (presenter for Wonder Gardens) said the newly completed Otter Grotto opened in August 2025 and brought two otters, May and Ivy, to the site. He reported a marked rise in visitation: “October 2024, 2,100 guests. October 2025, we're over 4,503 guests,” and described that increase as evidence the new exhibits are attracting visitors.
Planned projects included an animal care center with quarantine space, a surgery room, diet kitchen and administrative offices designed to improve animal welfare and support future accreditation; a walk‑through aviary and butterfly garden supported by a donation of approximately $135,000; and an event building for climate‑controlled programming for which the Gardens received state appropriations of $1,300,000. Neil said the event building is intended both as an educational space and as a non‑admission revenue generator that would help sustain operations.
Other donor‑supported items mentioned were a $40,000 donation for repurposing old habitats to house kinkajous, a $30,000 donation for tortoise habitat renovation, and plans for a flamingo housing area to allow for future animal additions. Neil described additional infrastructure work, including a newly operational well that will serve the gardens.
Council members uniformly praised the presentation and encouraged staff to work with Wonder Gardens to expedite permitting and design reviews. “If you're comfortable with each of the projects ... it’d be helpful to provide some direction so that when staff is coordinating with Neil, that we have the ability to move forward with permitting and review,” a city official said.
The Gardens also announced a 90‑years celebration scheduled for Jan. 31 and a Family Fun Day on Feb. 1, and asked the council to consider donor outreach and permitting timelines to align with upcoming fundraisers.
The council did not take a separate binding vote on specific project approvals at the meeting but directed staff to continue coordinating with the Gardens and to return with permitting steps and more detailed materials as needed.
