Commissioners approve fee waivers for high school rodeo, AgriWest presentation and adopt new stall rate

The Board of County Commissioners approved three related fairgrounds items at its Jan. 12 meeting. The board unanimously granted a fee waiver for the Northwest High School Rodeo Club to use the indoor arena for nine Friday practice sessions and two Gymkhana events (Feb. 7 and March 21). Club president Reagan Leonard told the board the program has roughly 40 members from several area high schools and described community and youth benefits.

Separately, the board approved a fee waiver for an AgriWest (AgriBusiness West Incubator Center) presentation featuring Dr. Nathan Perry on Jan. 29. Janie Van Winkle said the event — free to the public and supported by the Garfield County Farm Bureau — will present an economic-impact study of agriculture in five counties.

Facilities Director Dave Reninger proposed a change to stall rental rates at the fairgrounds to boost utilization: a $75/month secondary stall rate with a $100 deposit for feed and supplies, while primary stalls remain at the $100/month flat rate. Reninger said only six of 140 stalls were rented under the previous flat-rate system. The board voted to adopt the secondary rate to encourage additional rentals.

Why it matters: The decisions combine support for youth and agricultural outreach with a practical pricing change meant to increase revenue and use of county facilities. The changes were presented as routine, noncontroversial updates to fairgrounds operations.

Next steps: Staff will implement the new stall rental policy and coordinate logistics for the waived events.
