Select Board to seek references, then choose lower-cost firm for fire chief recruitment if references check out
Summary

Facing the pending vacancy in the Fire Chief position, the Select Board reviewed two proposals for an executive search and assessment center. The town administrator presented two quotes: one lower-cost option and one more expensive firm that included a detailed task list.
Board members asked staff to contact neighboring towns that had used the vendors for similar searches (Southborough, Marlborough, Shrewsbury) and to return with references. The board voted to give the town administrator discretion to check references and โ if town feedback is comparable across vendors โ to award the engagement to the lower-cost consultant.
Members discussed how many finalists the consultant should deliver (two or three) and agreed they preferred a short list for the board to interview. The board also reviewed job-description language (minimum EMT certification, preferred bachelor's degree in related fields) and asked the consultants about flexibility on educational requirements.
