Lancaster County Planning Commission Approves 50-Square-Foot Sign for Ransom’s Nursery

Lancaster County planning officials approved a variance to allow a 50-square-foot monument-style sign for Ransom’s Nursery at 1910 Irvington Road in the Kilmarnock area.
Planning staff told the commission the property sits in the highway corridor overlay district, where the Lancaster County Land Development Code caps freestanding signs at 32 square feet. Staff said the proposed sign will face Irvington Road (VSH 200) and be placed roughly 100 feet from Irvington Road and about 75 feet from White Pine Drive, exceeding the ordinance’s 15-foot right-of-way setback and helping preserve clear sight lines. “The variance is requested in order to install a freestanding monument style business sign on the north easterly side of their property fronting along Irvington Road,” planning staff said during the presentation.
Kelsey Haney, speaking for Ransom’s Nursery, offered to answer questions and said the existing sign at the White Pine Drive entrance would be removed so the main entrance functions from Irvington Road. “I’m here on behalf of Ransom’s Nursery, and I just wanted to say I’m happy to answer any questions that the board may have,” Haney said.
Commissioners noted the requested sign size is larger than others along Irvington Road but agreed that because the sign would be set well back from the roadway it would not be disproportionately prominent. One member referenced a recently approved larger sign for a rescue squad as comparable. Chair moved to approve the variance as requested; the motion was seconded and passed with no recorded opposition.
The variance approves the installation of a 50-square-foot monument-style sign for the property listed as tax map number 2827 in District 4. No written public objections were reported at the hearing.
