Nevada Youth Legislature names three nonvoting student delegates to Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education

The Nevada Youth Legislature selected three nonvoting student delegates to represent student perspectives on the Nevada Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education (CIEE).
Chair Song opened the selection process, citing Senate Bill 425, passed in 2023, which established the commission. The commission’s members requested nonvoting student representation; most meetings will be virtual with some held in Las Vegas. The Legislature invited brief, one-minute candidate statements and then held sequential votes for the three open delegate slots.
In candidate remarks, Melanie Carmenacci Martinez said, “education is the foundation of how we evolve as a state and as a society,” and urged that student perspectives be included in the commission’s work. Youth Legislator Grama noted Nevada’s low rankings in national education comparisons, arguing the commission needs student voices to inform reform. Chloe Kim, founder of the Bonus Box Foundation, cited her nonprofit work addressing period poverty and said that on-the-ground experience helps translate student needs into policy.
After recorded voting rounds, Chair Song announced Youth Legislator Wagner as the first selected delegate, Melanie Carmenacci Martinez as the second, and Youth Legislator Lee as the third. The appointees will serve as nonvoting representatives, expected to participate actively and to report back to the Nevada Youth Legislature on commission discussions and recommendations.
