Board reviews Bay Transit options; restoring continuous service would cost an extra $7,500

King William County staff briefed the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 11 about regional Bay Transit service options for the coming year and budget implications.
Staff said last fiscal year the county's funding contribution was approximately $29,001.46. For the current fiscal year the budget covers about 16 hours of bus capacity per day; staff described two service options provided by Bay Transit and noted a midday service gap in one option.
To eliminate the midday gap and provide continuous service staff said the additional cost would be $7,500, with West Point expected to cover half. "So Mr. Chairman... to completely erase the gap, they would need $7,500," staff said, and asked the board to review the handouts and provide guidance at the next meeting. The board discussed the importance of continuous service for residents who rely on the buses for grocery, medical and other essential trips.
Staff did not ask for an immediate funding commitment; they asked for direction and said they would place the item on the next meeting's agenda for action if the board is ready to decide.
Next steps: staff will consult with West Point, refine the proposals and return to the board with a recommendation for action at the next meeting.
