Board hears library transition updates, approves courthouse event funding request and a part-time court position

Supervisors received several community and administrative updates on June 9, including a library transition timeline, a Founders' Day funding request and approval of a part-time circuit court position.

Karina Ponkhausen, the commissioner of revenue, reviewed the courthouse anniversary events and said the committee raised $4,220 and spent $7,680 on the recent celebration; she requested the board set aside $5,000 for the 2026 Founders' Day event to cover porta-potties, buses and advertising. "We raised $4,220 in donations. The total amount we spent was $7,680," Ponkhausen said, and the board agreed to consider funding for the next year's event when she formally requested $5,000; the request was acknowledged by the board during her presentation.

County staff briefed supervisors on the library transition: the MOU between the county and PRL has been signed, PRL will convey collections and furnishings (but not technology) to the King William Library System, and services managed by PRL will continue through June 30 with King William taking over on July 1. Staff said the RFP for renovating the Upper King William branch was uploaded and a human error corrected; the submission deadline was extended to June 20. The board approved a motion to create a comp-board-funded part-time circuit court position (25-28 hours weekly) presented by Ms. Glazebrook; the position will begin around January and the speaker said the compensation board will fund it.

The board also approved appointments coming out of closed session for EDA and planning commission seats effective July 1.
