Board continues EMS captain position after chiefs say billing covers cost

King William County supervisors voted June 9 to continue an EMS captain position the county has used to manage medications, training and advanced-life-support operations.
Chief Ron Brown told the board the county has seen an increase in EMS calls from about 632 last year to approximately 812 so far this year, a roughly 24'08% rise. He described duties for the captain that include medication procurement, inventory and reconciliation, compliance with the Board of Pharmacy, training programs and community outreach. "This position is of no cost," Brown said, explaining that adjustments to EMS billing provided revenue to cover the role.
Board members pressed for details about whether the role must be a captain or could be a paramedic; Brown said the responsibilities align with an EMS captain title and that some training and outreach duties are integral to the position. Supervisors voted to continue the position for at least one fiscal year and asked staff to monitor ongoing costs and staffing levels.
The board recorded the motion and approved continuation by roll call. The chief said keeping the position is necessary to maintain advanced-life-support capabilities and manage medication requirements under state law.
