Board approves VDOT secondary six‑year road plan for FY2026–FY2031

The King William County Board of Supervisors approved the Virginia Department of Transportation’s proposed Secondary Six‑Year Improvement Plan for fiscal years 2026–2031 and the FY2026 construction priority list during its May 19 meeting.
Lee McKnight, VDOT’s Saluda residency administrator, presented the plan and the FY2026 budget projection. McKnight said the six‑year program is estimated at $804,892, including $577,102 allocated to unpaved roads that meet the 50 vehicles‑per‑day threshold and $230,790 in transportation enhancement/telefee funds. He identified the board’s top three priorities for the county as Route 621 (Green Level Road) with an estimate of $228,333 for construction in 2025; Route 649 (Brandywine Road) estimated at $93,764 for 2026; and Route 600 (East River Road) estimated at $179,789 for 2028.
Board members asked for clarifications about local drainage, rumble strips and pothole complaints on specific roads; McKnight confirmed some curve areas and edge conditions were being monitored and that certain routes had been scheduled for paving or special traffic counts.
Following the public hearing, the board read a draft resolution adopting the plan and, upon motion and second, approved the plan as presented at the hearing.
What happens next: VDOT and county staff will implement the first‑year construction priorities and apply any savings to future priorities under the Rural Rustic and secondary road programs.
