The King William County Board unanimously approved an agreement to allow the county to receive donated funds on behalf of the Friends of King William, a local nonprofit that supports the regional animal shelter. Scott Chrisman, vice president of the Friends, told the board the nonprofit helps fund veterinary care, heartworm treatments, surgical repairs and adoption programs and works to recruit volunteers and foster homes.
Chrisman said the Friends are registered as a 501(c)(3) and hold state registrations needed to accept tax‑deductible donations. He described work the group has done since forming in April 2023 to reduce euthanasia rates through fundraising and to sponsor adoption fees and veterinary care. The county attorney described the agreement as an accounting pass‑through: the county would accept donations into a budget line and forward them to the Friends; the agreement imposes no financial obligation on the county.
The board voted to adopt the agreement. Supervisors thanked the Friends for recent assistance and said the partnership helps extend services without increasing county operating costs. The board also noted collaboration with regional partners such as Indian River Humane Society and the shelter’s new director.
