Summary
The commission approved an MOU with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services to retrofit a retired school bus into an 18-person 'ambubus' to be staged in Southern Utah; Gold Cross Ambulance is expected to staff deployments and the asset may be used regionally under EMAC.
Iron County commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services that will allow the county to receive a state-funded retrofit kit to convert a retired school bus into an 18-person "ambubus" for mass-casualty patient transport.
Cassie Meredith of Iron County Emergency Management explained the state purchased an upfit kit and the county will acquire a retired school bus from Iron County School District. The kit will convert the vehicle to carry up to 18 patients and will be reversible so the bus can return to school service if needed. The state already operates a similar asset in northern Utah and wanted one available in the south to shorten deployment times.
Staff said Gold Cross Ambulance has been identified as a likely provider of personnel and supplies when deployed, and the MOU contemplates training and coordination so the asset can be used within regional mutual-aid frameworks, including EMAC (state-to-state mutual aid) if requested. Commissioners voted to approve the MOU; the agreement specifies roles for asset maintenance, staffing coordination and regional availability.
